The abbreviation RoHS describes in short the EG-Directive 2002/95/EG, which describes the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the implementation in national laws.

The goal ist to achieve the lead-free soldering of electronic parts, to restrict the use of flame retardants in cables and enforce the use of substitutes. In addition to that, used parts and components must also be free from these substances.

Following the RoHS directive, electrical and electronic appliances put on market after the 1st of July 2006 must not containt certain substances, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium or brominated flame retardants (PBB, PBDE). Manufacturers and traders are obliged to confirm that the products supplied are free from hazardous substances.
